Let me preface this with saying I was a fan of Sylvia from day one. I remember singing to these on the radio when they were originally released. I also had a regional band and opened for her and her band at a county fair. Enjoy Sylvia releases Second Bloom and it is superbly sublime the second time around.

One might think that would make a me biased, I choose to say no. The liner notes start out saying that she wanted to bring her music from the 1980’s into today. Fair enough. I will listen to the new CD without pulling out my old original CDs and listening to those versions. So without further ado, here is my assessment.

“Drifter”

The first thing I noticed is that Sylvia’s voice is still as strong as ever. The second is that there is a sense of maturity to the phrasing in her voice that lends itself well to the song. The song “Drifter” has always been one of my favorite songs of hers.

“Nobody”

The song “Nobody” is a great example of how a good song is a good song no matter how it is done. It stands the test of time very well. The arrangement had very crisp instrumentation.

“Tumbleweed”

This song and the simple arrangement always showcased Sylvia’s voice and these modernized versions only shows how great a vocalist she is even without all the vocal effects and reverb that so often bury vocals in today’s country music. Robby Turner’s stellar guitar is tasteful and accentuates the vocal.

“Fallin’ In Love”

Here is another example of how Sylvia’s voice has become more articulate and tasteful with age. She brings new life into the song.

“Cry Just A Little Bit”

This song caught my attention when it was originally released by Shakin’ Stevens in the 1980’s. I was happy to hear Sylvia cover it and just as happy to hear the remake on her current CD. I love the ending. It is nice to hear something other than the standard fade out that is so over used in today’s country.

“Sweet Yesterday”

It’s amazing how a good voice, well planned instrumentation and a phenomenal song can evoke emotion from deep inside the human soul. If you have any doubt about that, you should give this version of the song a serious listen.

“Like Nothing Ever Happened”

This another great example of how timeless a song can be, It is just as relevant today as it was back when it was originally released.

“Snapshot”

This version of the song has a nice back beat and groove that you have to listen for to really pick up on but it helps to move the song along in a new way. It is pushed along as well with some nuances in Sylvia’s voice that weren’t on the original.

“Love You by Heart”

Sometimes modulations in the song are just out in there to make a less than great arrangement seem a little move moving and interesting. That is certainly not the case here. The beat on the song make me want to head for a tropical island. I wonder if that was the intent.

“You Can’t Go Back Home”

I’m not usually a fan of long intros but on this version it really works to set the pace for the song. You can really feel the feelings being milked out of this song. If this song doesn’t tug at your heart then you either don’t have one or you came from a very terrible place growing up.

If you are looking for some of today’s let’s get drunk, party and scratch up the boyfriend’s old truck style female country that is so prevalent today on the radio. If you just want a nice back beat you can tap your foot to and sing along with a meaningless hook line that you won’t remember in a year than perhaps it is better for you to look elsewhere.

However, if you are looking for music with a meaning that will stand strong for years and something that you can actually enjoy listening to without the aid of alcohol, than add this one to your collection.

I hope they don’t want the review copy back because I am going to find it hard to part with and Sylvia, if you ever need a bass player give me a call! Everybody else, please get off your butts and purchase the CD.
