CD review for Tombstone Betty’s freshman release
I enjoy the job of doing CD reviews for people. It gets me exposed to some music I might not normally get to hear. It also widens my horizon if you will. Sit back and check out the CD review for Tombstone Betty’s freshman release. I am just Dying to review Tombstone Betty CD.
Here is my disclaimer
Dying to review Tombstone Betty CD
This one I have to sort of put aside my predisposed feeling about the group because I know that the lead singer of Tombstone Betty was part of Swamp da Wamp and shared the stage with a now deceased favorite singer of mine, Gig Michaels.
So I am going to put aside anything I think I might be expecting and put the CD on the player. I will give you my unbiased feelings no matter what they are. So with that said let’s give the EP an honest review. This is my first listen and first opinion.
“Rev It Up”
The song “Rev It Up” is a rather predictable biker song that could easily fit on the play list with Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild”. The tempo is a good way to kick off the EP and all in all, not a terrible song. Tasty use of echo on Adrienne’s voice near the end subdued but adds depth to the ending.
“Try My Wine”
This tune has a somewhat infectious rhythm to start off. Nice use of the organ parts in the middle parts. Also there are some hidden gems of slide guitar in the underflow of the song as well as during the lead. The song seems a little long but not to the point of being a problem for the listener.
“Shine”
This has a nice positive groove and message and has a strong 60s feel. It’s something that you would have expected to hear on a Joplin album. Although Nixon’s voice is much smoother and controlled than Joplin’s, Janis went more for raw emotion and Nixon goes for control and correct pitch. This is my favorite off the CD.
“What a Life”
This one screams Grateful Dead. So if any of you are dead heads this song is going to get your Garcia toes a tapping. There is a nice harmonica part in there that is nice to hear. It is a very much underused instrument in these days of electronics.
“Let It Roll”
This song compared to the rest of the CD seems a little thin when it comes to sound. That is not a recording fault or a problem it is the fact that the rest of the CD is fully scored with some loud instrumentation and this one is just an a guitar and the lead vocals. Actually “Let It Roll” is a very pleasing pairing of vocal and guitar it just makes it seem a little less produced.
“Tombstone Betty”
The bass register on “Tombstone Betty” is a little heavy. Don’t get me wrong I love a strong bass but there are times when it makes it hard to hear the vocal clearly. It’s a novel toe tapping song but certainly not one that would make my most played song. I can see it being a popular live song to get the crowd involved.
The album, like all freshmen project has its strong and weak points. You can tell there are some experienced folks behind the music. All in all it is a worthy addition to fans of southern rock, 60’s rock and roll or just good original music. The memory of Gig Michaels is there in the undercurrent of the songs and I am sure he is smiling down on them.
