Out-Law Country
They pretty much coined the phrase and created the sub-genre of out-law country. This happened in the 1960’s as a rebellion in the 1960’s because of the conservative restrictions to music production in Nashville. The country music super-group The Highwaymen formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement. They shunned the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. They were quite successful and their first album, Highwayman, was a success. The super-group continued working together for a time. The single from the album, also entitled “Highwayman“, and written especially for them by Jimmy Webb, was awarded the ACM’s single of the year in 1985.
