Jordan shares of the self-penned track: “it is addressing that infamous lie, ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ That’s the very last thing you want to hear when you’re getting your heart broke but for some reason, people use it all the time thinking they’re letting the other person down easy. The truth is, if only one of the two people in a relationship want it to be over, the other person is going to get hurt.
Initially, it was a real slow, acoustic kind of downer and I felt like the world has enough of those, but I didn’t want to scrap it. A few weeks before I went into the studio to record it, I rearranged some things, reimagined it as more of a rock song and that’s how we did it in the studio. As a music fan, I listen to Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, those guys more than I listen to anything. So, I tried to imagine: “what would this song sound like if one of them were doing it?” I cast that vision for Sal (my producer) and he and the band nailed the sound I was looking for. I like the juxtaposition of the sonic feel and the sadness of the lyric.”

It’s All The Same to Me with new track from Matt Jordan
The rising talent has been hard at work releasing music this past year. ‘Smoke,’ having originally won American Songwriter’s lyric contest back in 2014, exclusively premiered on American Songwriter.
