Merle Haggard has died at the age of 79 on his birthday

Merle Haggard has died after a long illness.  The Tennessean is reporting that Merle Haggard has passed away in California on his birthday.  cancels spring concerts when it becomes obvious that he is not healthy enough to go back out on the road.  What is really going on with Merle Haggard and his health?  If you go to his website, not only are all spring dates gone but his website is not showing any future tour dates at all.

This is a statement released by Merle recently:

“I want to thank my fans for their prayers and well wishes,” he said in a statement released Tuesday (March 29). “I hope to be back on the road in May, but I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Below is a history of Merle’s recent medical problems that have led him to this place.  Prayers are definitely needed for this man because he is struggling greatly with his health.

Merle Haggard was hospitalized in December with double pneumonia and during that time, he kept the fans up to date on his improving health.  In the past, Haggard has had problems with his lungs including chronic illnesses like bronchitis and lung cancer.  He spoke of the fear of the lung cancer in December saying that the doctors had to clear the infection enough to make sure it wasn’t the cancer coming back.

Country Weekly reported that Haggard’s Facebook page had said that Merle: “checked into a California hospital to receive treatment for pneumonia. The country icon had lung surgery in 2008 to have a cancerous tumor removed and since then has become more susceptible to respiratory issues.”

Merle Haggard was forced to cancel his December and January concerts and although he wished and prayed he could perform at the February concert which was a rescheduled concert because of a cancellation, he was just not strong enough.  This is the event at which a fan was photographed praying behind the country icon’s bus.

Haggard who is now 78 years old was very sad and sorry to have disappointed the fans.  The band was scheduled to play at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, California but Merle Haggard could not take the stage.  Saving Country Music reported that he was too ill to take the stage.  The fans got to see a wonderful performance from Merle’s son Ben Haggard and then Merle’s fiddle player made the announcement that Merle was just still too weak.

Later on that evening Merle Haggard posted this to his Facebook page.

“Thank you to the fans who came out tonight in Riverside!” he writes. “Sadly I’m just not strong enough yet. This man was praying behind my bus and made me realize how much you all care. Thank you so much.”
