Intoxicated Love
What a fantastic song, melody and lyrics are so freaking cool. Who doesn’t love a chorus that goes, “She only loves me when she’s drunk.” This song has hit all over it. I can see in my minds eye both guys and girls singing this to each other, either privately or at parties. What a fun song. This one should definitely get picked up by a film needing something fun but also serious in a tongue and cheek kind of way. Take a listen and you will also love Intoxicated Love when you are drunk.

Q: Just to get to know you better: Is the name HAL short for something?
A: My name isn’t short for anything. It’s just Hal.
Q: We just got finished listening to “Violet’s Song,” a beautiful song by the way. Do you write from true life experiences?
A: Thank you. That song is about my experience going from a little kid pretending to be a superhero and then growing up becoming a father and realizing I became a real superhero to my daughter. Yes, all the songs I write come from true life experiences. That’s actually part of the thing that’s made performing my music so scary sometimes. It’s like sharing your diary with the world. I think it’s also the thing that elevates my music because my listeners know there is real honesty and emotion behind my songs.
Q & A Continued
Q: How long have you been writing songs?
A: I’ve been writing songs since I picked up a guitar. Something like 24 years.
Q: How long have you been performing?
A: I’ve been performing a long time. When I was 6 years old I started impersonating the young Elvis in regional and eventually some national talent Shows. I didn’t really know why I wanted to perform so badly, but I loved entertaining a crowd of people!
Q: Do you have a favorite place you like to write? It can be outdoors, by the beach, a lake, or a mountain. I want to bring the reader into your process so the reader can picture you writing.
A: Writing music is such a personal, private experience for me, I can only do it when I’m by myself. There isn’t a particular place I like to write, but most of the time I’m sitting on my bed, or on the sofa, or at the kitchen table in the middle of the night while my family is sleeping, just up at 3am working through my own mental stuff.
Q & A Continued
Q: Do you have a personal favorite you have written so far?
A: Every time I write a new song it feels so magical to me, so each song has a special place in my mind. That being said though, I’ve never had a song connect with people the way my song, Next Year, has. I love making people feel good and I think that song is very hopeful and helps people feel like they aren’t going through the tough stuff alone.
Q: We know you weren’t born in Vegas, did you move there on your own so you could perform in Casino’s while honing your songwriting skills?
A: Actually, I never considered I would grow up and live and work in Vegas. My stepfather was a Lawyer in the Air force, so we moved around every 4 years. When I was 20 the Air force moved my family from Boston Massachusetts to Las Vegas, NV. After a few years of day jobs, karaoke, open mic nights and teaching music I finally started making a living playing music.
Q: Your musical style combines several genres. Is this something that you intentionally cultivated or did it just seemingly evolve naturally?
A: I have a lot of musical influences from very different genres, eras, and styles. I think it’s impossible to not have those influences in the DNA of my songwriting naturally and at the same time some of my sound is very much intentionally pulling different styles and genres together. I really wanted to create cinematic sounding folk, rock, blues filtered through a melodic pop sound.
Q: How many instruments do you play?
A: I play Acoustic guitar and sing.
Q: What is your favorite decade in music and why?
A: I really think the 70s was the greatest decade of music. It was like all these amazing things were coming together creatively, musically, and recording and music technology was getting better.
The final Q & A’s

Q: What is your next release?
A: I’m releasing a song called Vegas on September 22! Imp really excited for people to hear it! It’s a fun song. I wanted to write a simple song that people could vibe to at a club, or at home making pancakes on a Sunday morning. There’s some hidden meaning behind the song that makes it more fun for me and vocally I feel like it’s doing some subtle things you don’t hear very often in pop music.
Q: What made you want to release a single every 6 to 8 weeks?
A: During the Pandemic I had a chance to really stop and look at all the things I had accomplished. It was a chance to really take stock of my life and see where I was at. The first 10 years I was in Vegas I was focusing on making a name for myself and becoming a self sufficient adult. The next 10 years it became all about starting a family and continuing to make a living doing what I loved. What I didn’t realize is that I had sacrificed my focus on sharing my own music and I finally felt ready to fully chase my dream of being successful with my music and reach the most people I could. So I decided instead of just releasing a full album, I would release a single every 6-8 weeks and build my fan base organically, give people time to “find” me!
SONG REVIEW for VEGAS
While I want to make clear this is not a bad thing, this song makes me want to dig out my old Police Records and spin them. This mix is great. Everything is right there where it should be. It is cleanly recorded and everything you need is leveled in the mix to perfection.
The only disappointment I felt listening to the song is that it is too short. It leaves me wanting more. While that certainly may be the writer’s intentions, I could take more of the song before getting around to actually stopping it.
The mark of a good song is that you are sad to hear it go. The mark of a great song is that you are never ready for the ending. Sort of like “I want You She’s So Heavy” by the Beatles. It just goes on and on and yet you are sad when it finally stops so dramatically.
This is the kind of music that is hard to find but once you do it is harder to lose. It has a good message and feels faster than its 110 beats in C minor. What I’m saying is that at that speed it should feel like a stretch but the way it is arranged you cannot find a reason to not like the song.
IN CONCLUSION

I have to say that this song has made me a fan and I will start looking for more from him on line and wherever I can curate his art. Oh yeah and one thing more. After paying attention to the lyrics there are some pretty heavy things going on over there visually speaking. Give yourself a treat and have a listen.
