Better than the Beatles

The Daily Banner had a chance to talk to Wayne Nelson, the lead singer and band leader for the iconic Little River Band. With such hits like, “The Night Owls,” and “Take It Easy on Me,” under their belts, this band was surprised and in awe to find the legendary superstar Kris Kristofferson in their audience. Wayne Nelson describes that night with The Daily Banner. He explains that at one of their shows in California, they thought they saw a man that looked like Kris Kristofferson in the audience. Boy were they surprised when the venue manager knocked on the dressing room door a little while later and told them somebody special was there to see them.

So tell me Wayne, what happened on that really cool night when you were taking photos of the audience after your Little River Band show in California?

To describe the event was pretty amazing. The show is for the most part in the dark and even if the lights do come up, it is not real easy to pick people out of a crowd. I take pictures of the audience at the end of the show and put them on the bands Facebook page. The lights come up and there is a guy in like row 10, not where you would expect somebody of his career sitting.

It might have been even a little further back but certainly not in a VIP area or a special seat of any kind. He’s back and off to the right a little bit and I come around to him and he just kind of points. I went man, that guy looks familiar, where have we seen him before?

He looked familiar but from a distance very healthy and a full head of grey hair, pointing at the stage and clapping and just carrying on having a great time. I pointed back and I took the picture and we got done and we went back down into the green room and everybody was like, did you see him? I said; see who and they were like Kris Kristofferson.

He was definitely in one of the shots that you took and he was pointing at the stage. I said, the guy looked familiar but I would never in a million years have thought it was Kris. Then Chris our keyboard player walks in and says absolutely, that was Kristofferson. I was like wow, that’s so cool. Then one minute later, the manager of the venue pokes her head in the dressing room and says somebody real special wants to talk to you guys.

TDB: What is so amazing is how touched you are about the fact that he wanted to come and see you guys and talk to you. You are Little River Band.

LRB (WN): And he is Kris Kristofferson. In the midst of that conversation, he didn’t want to talk about himself. He kept saying,

“your vocals, I have never heard vocals like that, you guys sing like the Beatles.” He even said, “You’re better than the Beatles.”

I was like WOW, that’s crazy. From anybody else that’s just hyperbole but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Kris Kristofferson saw the Beatles, do you know what I mean? None of us took that as being a truism that we are better or equal to or even in the same book as the Beatles but the compliment was deep none the less.

We kind of laughed it off and then he came right back around to it again. He wouldn’t let that go. I said hey, are you going to tour? Maybe you want to use Little River Band as a back up band and he kind of grinned and giggled and as it wound down, we all traded emails and Facebook pages and so on and so forth and on we go.

He did say he was going to tour this year and invited us to see the show if we are near and there he went, Kris Kristofferson. Having him at our show was so cool.

TDB: That is very cool. Kris Kristofferson was honored by many country artists in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena on March 16, 2016.

LRB (WN): That is wonderful. He deserves it.

TDB: The Daily Banner finds it so remarkable that the Little River Band would be in such awe about Kris Kristofferson’s great compliments. You guys are pretty special too.

We talked about how music artists are also fans of other music artists and that everyone has the ability to be awe struck when meeting some of their musical idols.
